Feeney slipped her arm through Suze’s crooked elbow as they exited Mac’s house. “You know, I do love a man in uniform.”

He twisted to the right and left.

On a sigh, she said, “I mean you, Suze. You.” She patted his arm. “In uniform.” She let go as they reached the Hummer. Suze raced around to the passenger side and opened the door, holding it for her as she followed and climbed in. “Why, thank you, officer.”

The head spinning happened again.

“Officer is another term for a uniformed military man, Suze.” Feeney winked at him. “Surely, you know that.”

Suze closed her door, but Winn stopped him before he got to the driver’s side. “Let me see your eyes, Suze.”

“My eyes?”

“Yes. Lean down here. Just for a second.”

Suze did as Winn commanded and held his lids wide, fingers in place to keep them open.

“Interesting.”

“What?” He blinked a few times.

“Your pupils. One is black, like normal. The other, though, has no pupil. Thought I saw that earlier when we were talking but we weren’t close enough for me to truly tell.”

Suze’s hands went straight to his face and covered his left eye, the world turning as bright as a solar eclipse.

“Right one is the weird one.”

He switched over to the other side.

“Was it like that before?” Winn jotted something down in the tablet he carried with him.

“I dunno.”

“Can you see out of it?”

Suze covered his good eye again and opened the apparently icky one, only to be greeted by blinding white. “Oh! No, it’s not working!”

“That must have been what was happening before. He couldn’t see through the bad eye,” Stephen says.

“No shi—”

“Michael,” I’m forced to say. I may be young eternal, but I’m old in spirit and, good gracious, he can keep that to himself.

“Sherlock,” he says, getting in that proverbial last word.

Shivers wracked Suze’s body. He jumped up and down, shaking the ground and the car. “What am I going to do?” More jumping occurred. “What am I—”

Winn laid a hand on Suze’s arm. “I’ll figure this out. Just … stick with me.”

“Right. Stick with you.” Suze held his hand up to his nose and did a chop motion.

“Exactly. Focus. On me.”

With another salute, Suze opened the driver’s door. Winn stepped up to the seat. “I don’t think it’s safe for you to drive right now.”

“Right. Right.” Suze did his numerous-nod again. “Right.” He climbed in the back—for the first time ever in his life. Abaddon demons never took the back seat. They had to be prepared to fight to the death. To protect their charges. Yet, Suze couldn’t do any of that. His entire existence seemed pointless, and he slumped in the seat, making it creak as it leaned back.

He’d only wanted to have a little fun in a fun little car. He’d only wanted to drive said little car all the way across the country to visit Mac and Winn. For a little fun. That vacation everyone continued to suggest to him.

“Suze?” Feeney positioned herself so she faced Suze as Winn drove them down roads Suze didn’t even glance toward.
